WEEKLY VOCABULARY & SPELLING  BREAKDOWN

Daily Procedure: In class & Homework

Grades 7 – 8

To all students of Mr. Gerson:

Vocabulary building is something that we will be working on each day for the entire year in my class.  Here is a breakdown of how we will be going about our work with our vocabulary book in class.  This schedule WILL become so routine and regular for you that our work in vocabulary building will run like clockwork.  Know that you will have vocabulary homework for my class every night.  Know that you will have a vocabulary test every Monday.

Day 1 (Monday)

In class – Take We’ll divide up the vocabulary words of the week so that you can become that particular word’s “Word Expert Artist.”

HW - Vocabulary note cards & create an 8.5” x 11” (landscape) drawing of your word.

Front side = New vocabulary word, written neatly, and spelled properly

Back side = Definition of word, part of speech (POS), and synonyms

Day 2 (Tuesday)

In class – Present your drawing & explain it’s meaning, and then attach it to the “Weekly Word Wall” so that everyone in the class can see it throughout the week.  Observers must fill out a grading rubric and vote for which picture they think is the best.

HW - All pages of the vocabulary workbook.

Day 3 (Wednesday)

In class – Students self correct their own work and monitor their own learning, as Mr. Gerson will put a transparency of the answers from the workbook pages on the board.  This should take approximately 5 – 8 minutes, and as long as students are staying on task and effectively monitoring their own learning, they may engage in neighborly banter.

In class – With a partner, double check to see that you’ve correctly identified any of the word’s alternative, additional parts of speech.  Share your word’s alternative, additional parts of speech on the overhead.

HW – Write one sentence for each of the unit’s words, practicing the skills you’ll be tested on.

Day 4 (Thursday)

In class – In groups of three, peer edits of the sentences will occur.  Constructive criticism is a must.

HW – Write a short story that encompasses 8 (if you’re in 6th grade), 10 (if you’re in 7th grade), and 12 (if you’re in 8th grade) of the vocabulary words.  The story can be about anything that you like.

Day 5 (Friday)

In class – Students will read their stories aloud in front of the class.  The listeners will fill out a rubric to evaluate their fellow classmates and will vote for their favorite story.

HW – Have a good weekend…and be sure to study for your test, which is on Monday.
